A new study suggests that when parents do baby talk to their babies, they might be helping them learn to produce speech.
The way parents tend to speak to babies—raised voice, exaggerated(夸张的) pronunciation, slower speed—is considered to not only attract them, but possibly help them learn to understand what parents are saying. New research from the University of Florida suggests that baby talk can have another, previously unknown advantage: helping babies learn to produce their own speech. The researchers think that by copying the sound of a smaller vocal tract(声道), we adults are showing babies what the words should sound like when they come out of their own mouths.
“It seems to contribute to the production of speech, not just the understanding of speech,” said Matthew Masapollo, Ph.D., an assistant professor in UF's Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. “It's not just goo-goo ga-ga.”
In the study, the researchers changed sound frequency(声频) to copy either a baby's or an adult's vocal tract, and then tested how babies reacted. 6~8-month-old babies “showed a clear and strong preference for speech with the frequency that suggests a vocal tract similar to their own in size and length,” they wrote.
4~6-month-old babies didn't have that preference, though. So the fact that older babies are more attracted to adults' baby-like sounds may result from their new ability to control their voices and make words rather than meaningless sounds.
“Though baby talk may sound simple, it's achieving a lot,” says co-author Linda Polka of McGill University. “We're talking to babies to show them something about speech production,” she said. “We're equipping them for their own speech.”

This morning it was harder for me to get out of bed than usual. Usually, I have nightmares(噩梦) because of the terrible movies I watched the night before, and sometimes spicy(辛辣的) food makes me feel uncomfortable in sleeping. However, last night I turned all night because my anxiety was at an all-time high. I kept thinking about what my first day of high school would be like. What should I wear? What should I put in my schoolbag? I finally fell asleep around 5:45 and my alarm started going off at 6.
I couldn't let those thoughts cloud my mind. I had to prepare myself for one of the most important days of my life. I packed my things and headed out of the door. My first class wasn't too bad. I listened to my English teacher discuss the importance of themes, but otherwise, it was a pretty easy-going class.
During lunchtime, I had a pizza and an orange soda. I'm grateful for the food not tasting terrible so I wouldn't keep thinking about that all day. I still didn't manage to find any new friends to sit with, but I'm just happy I found a quiet place to stay. It would have been uncomfortable if I had to sit in a noisy classroom to eat lunch, or an empty hallway with some kids walking past and laughing.
Once the last bell rang, I was eager to get home and tell Charlie, my childhood friend how my day went at a new school. I was just excited to speak to a familiar voice and share my feelings of the whole day. I wondered how his day went at his new school as well. I got on the same train line that I took to school and headed back home.
Speaking to Charlie on the phone, I found out he made many new friends today. Once I got off the phone, I threw myself on the bed with a long sigh(叹气). Although I'd experience this again tomorrow, I'm glad I got through my first day at school.

3. Why was the author eager to go home after school?
A. To play with his childhood friend.
B. To know how Charlie's first day went.

U.S. teens spend more than eight hours a day on screens, and there's growing concern over it. Now, a new study published by the American Psychological(心理的) Association, confirms that teens seem to feel better about themselves when they cut back.
“Social__media__can__feel__like__a__comparison__trap(陷阱),” says study author Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University. Her research found that limiting screen time to about one hour a day helped anxious teens and young adults feel better about their body image and their appearance. “What I noticed in social media was that I couldn't help but compare myself.” Thai says. Reading posts from famous people and influencers, as well as people in her own social network, led to a lack of self-confidence.
So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reducing time on social media would improve body image. They gathered a few hundred volunteers, aged 17~25, all of whom had experienced symptoms(症状) of anxiety or depression—which could make them easily influenced by social media. Half of the volunteers were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media with no limits.
The researchers gave the volunteers surveys at the beginning and end of the study, including statements such as “I'm pretty happy about the way I look,” and “I am satisfied with my weight.” Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5-point scale. The change may seem small, but any change in such a short period of time is worth noticing.
“It's encouraging that college students were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks,” psychologist Andrea Graham says. While this study included people with symptoms of anxiety or depression, Graham says it's worth applying this approach to other groups, such as people with eating problems.
5. What is the probable meaning of the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A. Teens are forced to post their own images on social media.
B. Teens couldn't help but spend too much time on social media.

6. How was the research conducted by Thai and a team of researchers?
A. By listing numbers.
B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By analyzing causes and effects.
7. What can we learn about the survey?
A. The study included people with mental health and eating problems.
B. There was little difference in appearance score between the two groups.
C. College students were not willing to reduce screen time for more weeks.
D. Cutting social media use makes a difference to teens' opinion of their image.
8. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A. Less screen time, more self-confidence
B. Social media, a time bomb on your health
C. How to improve your image on social media
D. Concern over social media addiction keeps growing

A number of people hold an optimistic attitude toward artificial intelligence's ability to reshape education nowadays. However, many feel such claims are overblown.
Kentaro Toyama, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Information, is one of those doubtful about the idea of using AI in the classroom.
Toyama mentioned a situation he encountered while working in an after-school program in digital literacy(数字技术素养). He said, “In trying to teach students to use technology, the greatest difficulty is the technology itself.” As soon as he looked away from the students, they would “very quickly find the most fun games they could find on the computer and start playing them”. That reveals the problem with putting too much faith in AI for teaching. “There is great potential for it to be a distraction,” he said.
Toyama once surveyed a large group of people about their preference for the following educational situations: a school with no teachers but powerful AI, one with bad teachers but strong computers, one with good teachers but no computers, or one with great teachers and many computers. The result showed that nobody would send their children to a school with powerful AI but no teachers, or one with bad teachers but strong computers. Toyama concluded, “Good teachers are what matters; everything else is secondary compared to that.”
Toyama is also concerned that AI and technology may widen the gap between disadvantaged schools and wealthier schools. He said, “In the case of schools, well-resourced schools will find the best ways to use technology. But if you're in a school district that is underfunded and parents are not involved, it doesn't make a difference how good the technology is, and it will not turn that situation around.”
When asked when schools should adopt AI, Toyama suggested that they should wait until the basics are in place, teachers want it, and the technology is proved to have positive educational values.
( )5. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?

B. To recommend his favorite school to parents.
C. To compare the differences between AI and teachers.
D. To prove that preference for schools varies among people.
( )7. Which of the following statements will Toyama probably agree with?
A. AI has the potential to reshape teaching and learning.
B. A good school should put students and technology first.
C. AI will be able to educate students as well as real teachers.
D. AI and technology may unbalance educational resources.
( )8. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A novel. B. A magazine.
C. A textbook. D. An announcement.
